Singaporean Group Wants To Build Power Plant In HCM City

The HCM City People’s Committee has asked Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to allow Singaporean firm SembCorp Utilities to invest in a power plant in the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Zone under a build – operate – transfer (BOT) scheme.
The city also asked the government to add the project to the national power grid development plan for 2006-2010.
The power plant is pitched at capacity of 700MW, with investment of around $500 million. Construction is scheduled for two years, and the plant will be transferred to HCM City after 30 years of operation.
This year the power sector is giving priority to HCM City, with supply of 10.6bil KWh. However, the city will be short of electricity should any power plant in the national power network fail.
The project would form an important source of supply of power for the city in particular and the country in general. Source: Vietnam Agency
