Alleged Motorbike Robbery Kingpin Nabbed In Hai Phong

Hai Phong City police have arrested a man for allegedly leading a gang of motorbike thieves after four months on the lam, a police source said on Friday.

Tran Giang Nam, 32, who had been under an arrest warrant since April, was apprehended with several alleged accomplices on Thursday while attending a birthday party at the Tien Luc karaoke bar in Ngo Quyen District.
Police have accused Nam of leading a gang of thieves that used swords to attack people and rob their motorbikes on dozens of occasions in northern provinces.

Nam has already been convicted of robbery twice, said police.

Hai Phong investigators said they had pressed charges against 22 people, confiscated 70 motorbikes and interrogated nearly 100 people in the months-long investigation of the alleged gang.

At the karaoke bar raid, police also seized marijuana and found that seven of the 18 people attending the party were under the influence of the drug, investigators said.
