China Posts Plans On Vietnam Invasion

Vietnam is always suspicious of China's imperialist intentions, and with good reason. Less than 30 years ago, China invaded its southeast Asian neighbour and in the years since the two countries have fought intense naval battles.

As recently as July, Beijing warned the oil company ExxonMobil it could forget about further business with China if it went ahead with plans to develop Vietnamese oil fields. So when plans for an invasion of Vietnam recently turned up on several Chinese web sites, the Hanoi government took it very seriously.

The plans envisaged a 31-day campaign starting with missiles strikes followed by an invasion by over 300,000 troops. Notes on the plans said Vietnam is the major obstacle to China's emergence as a regional power and has to be conquered if Southeast Asia is to be brought under Chinese control.
